A citizen, Shahzad Rehman, has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court against the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for refusing to renew his Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). The petition names the federal government and NADRA officials as respondents, highlighting a violation of the petitioner’s fundamental rights.
Shahzad’s lawyer, Advocate Usman Farooq, argued that NADRA informed his client that his CNIC was blocked due to an alleged absence of prior records, without providing further justification. This denial has deprived Shahzad of his basic rights as a Pakistani citizen, causing significant difficulties in daily activities such as banking, travel, and access to services. Despite repeated visits to NADRA offices, Shahzad was advised to seek judicial recourse.
The petition labels NADRA’s actions as illegal and a breach of constitutional rights, urging the court to order the immediate renewal of Shahzad’s CNIC. The case also highlights broader concerns about bureaucratic hurdles faced by citizens in securing essential identification documents.
The Sindh High Court is expected to hear the petition soon, with potential implications for NADRA’s processes and citizens’ access to their rights.
