Iqrar-ul-Hassan Sent to Karachi Prison as Court Orders Judicial Remand in PECA Case

Television anchorperson Iqrar-ul-Hassan has been sent to Karachi prison on judicial remand in a case involving alleged anti-state content shared on social media, according to reports.

The case was registered by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). The agency accused Hassan of allegedly sharing false, defamatory, and anti-state content through his official social media accounts. These allegations have not been established as proven facts in court.

Hassan was initially placed in NCCIA custody for four days on October 13. A Karachi court subsequently extended his physical remand by two days, directing the agency to produce him again on October 19.

Investigators said digital devices seized during the investigation had been sent for forensic analysis. His defence counsel challenged the proceedings and sought his discharge from the case, while the court rejected the initial challenge to his physical remand.

The case has attracted public attention because Hassan is a well-known television personality and political commentator. Further legal proceedings will determine the next steps in the case.
