ISLAMABAD: Tensions over Imran Khan’s medical treatment intensified in the Senate as government and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers traded accusations over the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directive concerning the former prime minister’s treatment.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar attempted to move a resolution seeking treatment for Khan at Shifa International Hospital. However, Presiding Officer Senator Shahadat Awan stopped the move, saying the matter was sub judice and could instead be raised as a point of order.

Zafar argued that no government could refuse to implement a Supreme Court order and cited Article 190 of the Constitution. He alleged that the government had failed to follow the court’s August 18 directive regarding Khan’s transfer and medical care, including the formation of a medical board.

The government rejected the allegations. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah maintained that whether the Supreme Court’s order had been properly implemented was a matter for the court to determine. He also accused PTI of politicising Khan’s health.

The dispute follows the Supreme Court’s order directing Khan’s medical examination and treatment at Shifa International Hospital. Khan was subsequently taken for a medical examination and returned to Adiala Jail, while PTI continued to question the manner in which the court’s directions were implemented.

The Senate confrontation has added another layer to an already contentious political and legal dispute surrounding Khan’s health, treatment, and detention.
