Hazardous medical waste was found lying exposed inside the premises of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC)-run Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, raising serious concerns about public health, environmental safety, and hospital waste management practices.

According to reports, used syringes, cannulas, IV drip sets, plastic medical waste, and biological material, including human placenta, were discovered scattered in the open within the hospital grounds. The exposed waste posed potential health risks to patients, attendants, hospital staff, and sanitation workers who could come into contact with infectious materials.

The issue reportedly faced resistance from hospital staff, who allegedly attempted to obstruct media coverage. Despite the challenges, the team documented footage showing hazardous medical waste openly discarded on the premises.

Health experts warned that medical waste containing biological material and used sharps must be collected, transported, and disposed of in accordance with strict safety protocols. Improper disposal can increase the risk of infectious diseases, including hepatitis and HIV, while also exposing healthcare workers and the public to accidental needle-stick injuries.

Responding to the incident, a KMC spokesperson said he was unaware of the situation and confirmed that a report had been sought from the hospital administration. Officials added that the facility’s last inspection of its medical waste management system had taken place about two months earlier. The incident has renewed questions over compliance with standard operating procedures and oversight of hazardous waste disposal in public hospitals.
