PDMA issues heatwave alert for Punjab as temperatures expected to soar until May 11

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for several districts across the province, warning that extremely high temperatures are expected to persist until May 11. Citizens have been advised to take precautionary measures as weather conditions intensify.

According to the advisory, temperatures in many districts are likely to remain significantly above seasonal averages, with southern and central Punjab expected to experience the harshest conditions. Officials warned that prolonged exposure to intense heat could increase the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses.

The PDMA has directed local administrations, hospitals, rescue services, and disaster response teams to remain on high alert and ensure emergency arrangements are in place. Authorities have also instructed schools and public institutions to spread awareness about heat safety measures.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak daytime hours, drink plenty of water, and wear light clothing to minimise health risks. Farmers and labourers working in open areas were specifically advised to take extra precautions.

The warning comes as Pakistan faces increasingly frequent and severe climate-related weather events, with experts linking rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves to the broader impacts of climate change.
