The beloved yellow characters from the Despicable Me franchise have long entertained audiences with their chaotic and clumsy antics. But according to their creator, Pierre Coffin, there’s a specific reason why Minions are all male.

Coffin explained it in a 2015 interview that the decision was rooted in the characters’ comedic identity. Known for their exaggerated foolishness and unpredictable behaviour, the Minions were designed to embody a particular type of humour. He said he found it difficult to imagine female characters behaving in the same absurd, buffoonish way that defines the Minions’ personality.
As a result, the entire Minion population was intentionally created as male to maintain consistency in their comedic tone. The choice wasn’t about excluding diversity, but rather about preserving a specific style of humour that Coffin envisioned from the beginning.
