The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won a historic parliamentary election, securing a majority in the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad and marking a major turning point in Bangladesh’s political landscape, according to local broadcasters and international reports.

This vote—the country’s first since the Gen Z-inspired protests of 2024 that ousted longtime premier Sheikh Hasina—saw the BNP cross the halfway mark, winning at least 151 seats, enough for a simple majority. The win is expected to restore political stability and signal a change in governance after years of unrest and anti-government demonstrations.
The BNP’s leader, Tarique Rahman, is poised to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister as his party consolidates power. Supporters view the result as a mandate for reforms, economic revitalisation and anti-corruption measures. Meanwhile, rival parties such as the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami trailed far behind in the polls.
The peaceful election and strong voter turnout highlight a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s democratic evolution.
