Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned Israel that the annexation of the occupied West Bank will not be tolerated, saying that such a move would cost Israel its support from the United States.
In an interview with an American magazine, President Trump said that the annexation plan violates earlier understandings with Arab nations. “We had promised Arab countries, but we cannot allow that now,” he stated.
He added that the United States enjoys strong backing from its Arab partners, and if Israel proceeds with annexation, it will lose crucial American support.
According to Arab media reports from Washington, President Trump also commented on the ongoing situation in Gaza, saying that hostilities in the strip have halted and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should accept the ceasefire agreement.
The US president warned that any breach of the ceasefire by Hamas would bring “disastrous consequences,” stressing that Hamas must honor its commitment to disarm. “If Hamas refuses to disarm, American intervention will become inevitable,” Trump said.
He added that, for now, Hamas has agreed to lay down its weapons under the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
It is important to note that the Israeli parliament recently passed a controversial bill seeking to annex the occupied West Bank, drawing widespread condemnation from Arab and Muslim countries.
