The sound of gunfire took the University of Karachi by storm in a splendid demonstration put forward by the Special Security Unit (SSU) of the Sindh Police on 24, 2025, in the Chinese Teachers’ Memorial Auditorium.
Karachi University’s Department of Criminology partnered with the Special Security Unit (SSU) of the Sindh Police to deliver an engaging seminar and training session that left students buzzing with excitement.

The event garnered the attention of faculty, teachers, professionals, and students of the criminology program alike, which blended education, adrenaline-charged action, and real-world insights into the world of law enforcement. Students not only learned about the tools and tactics of security forces but also stepped into the action themselves through a thrilling mock drill.
The seminar kicked off with SSU experts diving into the nitty-gritty of ammunition used by police and security forces. They explained the types, functions, and risks of various weapons, making complex concepts accessible to students. The room hummed with curiosity as the future criminologists absorbed practical knowledge about the tools that keep communities safe.
The highlight of the day, however, was the Hostile Environment Awareness Training (H.E.A.T.) and self-defense session. SSU commandos led students through intense, hands-on exercises designed to sharpen their instincts and skills. The training wasn’t just for show—students, both male and female, actively participated, learning techniques to navigate dangerous scenarios.
The main highlight of the event was a gripping mock drill that brought the auditorium to life. SSU officers simulated a hostile scenario, with some playing the role of terrorists while others showcased SWAT team tactics to neutralize the threat.

The realism peaked with a fake bomb detonation, designed to mimic an explosion without any real danger. Blank bullets—loud but harmless—crackled through the air, filling the room with booming echoes.
The sudden noise sent students gasping and cheering, their reactions a blend of shock and fascination at the orchestrated chaos. Some students even joined a similar drill, getting a taste of the adrenaline and decision-making that define such operations.
The program concluded with enthusiastic and motivating speeches by the chief guests, including the chairperson of the Department of Criminology, Prof. Dr. Naima Saeed and DIG Dr. Maqsood Ahmed of the SSU. They wished the students well on their journey towards a hopeful future in law enforcement and commended the work put forward by the university, training commandos of the SSU, faculty, and students alike.
The University of Karachi and SSU crafted an unforgettable experience that bridged theory and practice. The event not only educated students about criminology but also empowered them with practical skills and a deeper respect for the forces that protect society.
