Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, has announced plans to lay off 14,000 employees across its corporate sector.
According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Amazon confirmed on Tuesday that the job cuts are part of a broader restructuring plan aimed at making the company more efficient and adaptable in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
The company stated that as AI continues to reshape the business landscape, Amazon must streamline operations and reduce hierarchy to take advantage of emerging opportunities. Earlier reports had suggested that the total number of layoffs could reach as high as 30,000.
Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President, said in a note to employees that the decision is intended to strengthen the organization and realign resources toward areas that are strategically vital for the company and its customers.
She added that artificial intelligence is driving the biggest transformation since the dawn of the Internet, significantly accelerating innovation and operational processes. “To meet these changes, Amazon must evolve into a more empowered and agile structure to serve our customers faster and better,” she said.
The internal note also mentioned that Amazon is committed to supporting employees affected by the layoffs. Wherever possible, the company will offer reassignment opportunities, and for those who cannot be accommodated, severance packages and assistance programs will be provided.
Currently, Amazon employs more than 1.5 million people worldwide, including both office staff and warehouse workers.
