A leaked video showing the lavish wedding of the daughter of Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, one of Iran’s most senior defense and national security officials, has sparked widespread anger and debate across Iranian society and political circles.
Rear Admiral Shamkhani, who previously played a key role in Iran’s nuclear negotiations with the United States and oversaw crackdowns on women’s rights protests, is now facing severe public criticism over the controversy.
According to American media reports, the viral video shows Ali Shamkhani walking into the wedding hall with his daughter, the bride. The ceremony reportedly took place in April last year, but the footage was only recently leaked, quickly spreading across social media platforms.
What has fueled public outrage is the footage showing Shamkhani’s daughter and wife dressed in modern Western-style clothing, while other women in attendance were also seen without hijabs — a scene sharply at odds with the strict dress codes enforced in Iran.
The leaked video has prompted a wave of anger among citizens, many accusing Shamkhani and other Iranian officials of hypocrisy. Critics say those who impose strict social and religious restrictions on ordinary people fail to follow the same rules themselves.
One Iranian newspaper ran a headline reading *“Scandal Buried Him”* alongside a photo of the senior official. Prominent journalist Amir Hossein Mosula wrote on social media that “Iranian officials do not believe in the laws they make — they only want people’s lives to be miserable.”
The controversy has reignited public debate over Iran’s leadership, transparency, and double standards, with many calling for Ali Shamkhani’s resignation from all government positions.
