59 Karachi South Buildings Deemed Dangerous, 65 Families Evacuated

In the wake of the tragic collapse of a residential building in Lyari’s Baghdadi area, which claimed 27 lives, the Sindh government and district administration have intensified efforts to address unsafe structures across Karachi.

A comprehensive survey of dilapidated and uninhabitable buildings was made in an attempt to mitigate such risks and has now been completed, with recommendations prepared for compensating affected families. According to the district administration, a list for rental assistance has been submitted to the Sindh government to support displaced residents.

In Karachi South, 59 buildings have been declared highly dangerous, with 31 uninhabitable structures already evacuated, including 65 families from Lyari. Additionally, 23 families from Aram Bagh, Saddar, and Garden have been relocated due to hazardous conditions. The administration plans to evacuate 28 more critically unsafe residential and commercial buildings in the coming days.

The Sindh government has announced a relief package, providing three months’ rent to families displaced from these buildings to ease their transition.

The Lyari incident has prompted urgent action, including the suspension of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) head and plans to demolish 51 of the 586 identified unsafe structures in Karachi.

The government has also instructed the commissioner to conduct further surveys to assess ownership and tenancy details, ensuring accountability to prevent future tragedies.
