Mayor Karachi Demands Accountability for Karachi’s Road Maintenance Failures

In a recent letter addressed to Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab raised serious concerns about the functioning of Town Municipal Administrations (TMAs) in Karachi, accusing them of exceeding their authority and neglecting critical infrastructure responsibilities.

According to the mayor, TMAs are overstepping their jurisdiction by carrying out unauthorized road cutting in various parts of the city. He highlighted that these actions are being taken without proper coordination or approval, leading to mismanagement and disruption. Furthermore, Mayor Wahab pointed out that despite receiving funds from utility service providers in the form of road-cutting challans, the TMAs have failed to utilize these resources for the construction and repair of roads, including major and internal highways in Karachi.

The mayor emphasized that the central and internal roads of Karachi have not been constructed or maintained despite the availability of funds, leaving the city’s infrastructure in a state of disrepair. He accused certain towns of disregarding their designated limits and engaging in unauthorized road-cutting activities, which further exacerbates the situation.

In his letter, Mayor Wahab urged Minister Saeed Ghani to take immediate action to address these issues and ensure that the TMAs operate within their designated roles and responsibilities. He called for stricter oversight to prevent the misuse of authority and to ensure that funds allocated for road construction and maintenance are utilized effectively for the development of Karachi’s infrastructure.

The mayor’s letter stresses the need for accountability and coordinated efforts to address the city’s infrastructure challenges, urging swift intervention from the provincial government to resolve the ongoing issues.
